Motivation (cover) letter

The motivation letter together with the CV is part of the application material. It is often identified as the cover letter, but in the classical sense, the two are not the same. Writing a cover letter is essential if you are applying for a job via email. In this case, we attach the CV and the motivation letter, and in the e-mail we describe in a few sentences our name, what we are applying for and what documents we have attached (actually this will be our cover letter).
However, this information can also be found in our motivation letter, so in case of applying in person or by mail, it is usually enough to create it.

The purpose of the motivation (cover) letter:

  • Expansion of what is described in the CV. Here we have the opportunity to explain professionally relevant information that was left out of the CV in order not to become overcrowded with the CV. We can detail the points mentioned in the CV or not described in great detail, for example in relation to our studies or our internship/experience.
  • Raising awareness and encouraging the reader to study the resume more deeply
  • To talk about ourselves and to present our personality by lighting things that are more important for the job application
  • Presentation of our goals and motivation

All in all, with the motivation letter, we start communicating in a more personal tone and trying to form the image of the most suitable candidate.

The format:

  • Up to one page, airy, articulated, official format letter. The font, the style, the font size should match the resume's.
  • It starts with an address. It is advisable to address by name, but if we cannot find out the name of the recipient, we can use the usual "Dear Sir/Madam!" form. Several advisors say it’s even worth investigating to find out who will judge our letter because a much more personal, name-based address can expect a lot.

The letter usually covers 4 topics:

  • We need to refer to the first sentence right away. Here we describe which job we want to apply for (if there is a reference number in the advertisement, also indicate it!) and where we found out about this vacancy.
  • The next part is a summary and supplement of the CV. Here it is possible to detail our professional aptitude, to explain the related parts in more detail. We can write about our studies, experiences and achievements.
  • The next paragraph of our letter is a more personal presentation of ourselves. Here we can discuss our qualities and abilities; we can cover our language skills or the competencies acquired during our professional work.
  • Finally, our motivation and goals are briefly presented. In this section, we will explain why we applied for the job, why this particular job, why this company, and what we want to achieve in the future if we are hired.
  • In the last paragraph, we close the letter and express our hope for the possibility of a personal introduction
  • Of course, our motivation letter must also be dated. Make sure you have a fresh date on it!
  • As a last step, it is very important to sign the letter.
